Kyle’s CrossFit Caveman Story!

“No thanks, it’s not for me”

That was what I told my friend each time she tried to get me to go do a work out at CrossFit Caveman. I was sure that CrossFit wasn’t for me for a number of reasons.

  1. I have Kienbock’s Disease in my right wrist, which basically means I have a permanently broken wrist and it will never heal. That also means that additional injuries will only make it worse, so of course CrossFit wasn’t for me.
  2. It’s group fitness and because I was new to Houston I hardly knew anyone in the area let alone people at the gym. That kind of makes group fitness an intimidating experience.
  3. I was already fairly active with running and lifting at the gym on my own.
  4. Lastly I had read enough of the CrossFit lingo on friends’ facebook posts to know it wasn’t for me.

I’m not sure why I eventually CAVED but I am so thankful that I finally gave in and agreed to attend a class with my friend. I never would have thought that something like CrossFit could make such a big impact on my life but it has. All of the excuses I had used to put off trying it where proven to be false and done so quickly.

From my very first workout the coaches took the time to try and understand my injury, the limitations it created (both physical and mental) and modified my workouts to fit my needs. It was also very apparent from the first steps I took into this gym that this was just an excellent group of normal people that were looking for a great workout. The Cave didn’t feel like your normal gym where everyone is just a visitor but instead it had a culture of inclusion to it. Despite the competitive foundation of CrossFit even the most competitive people at the gym would get just as excited when the last person left is pushing to finish the workout as they do when they accomplish a personal goal. Everyone makes you feel welcome and if you wanted to you could quickly get involved when people get together outside of the gym. Plus the owners do a great job of putting together holiday parties that help everyone get to know each other and make you feel welcome from day one.

To top it all off the workouts are great and I have seen some excellent results. When I joined the gym in late April I weighed 230 pounds and as of the beginning of November I am down to just over 200 pounds and I feel the best I have in the last 10 years. I can say without a doubt that joining CrossFit Caveman has one of the best decisions I have made in a long time, not only for the physical gains but for the social aspect as well and I would recommend it to anyone.
